This is Happening’s late Summer 2015 post (so late that it is actually Fall 2015)

This is Books

Top Books to Recommend Right Now (not because they were recently published but because my right now involves a book I read this summer and then other books I’ve read over the past 3 years. Yeah. That’s right.)

Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter

How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper

This is Musicality

I really, really loved this article. It reminded me of music classes with my babies and how happy the classes made me.

They are happy places. It’s true.

And it might be because of all the egg shaking that goes on.

Never mind the cute babies.

So, who’s meeting me in my kitchen with an egg shaker and a song?!

This is subscription-worthy

A new e-newsletter to love. Maybe. Since it just came out yesterday and there has only been one.

Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner (Lena’s BFF and the executive producer of HBO’s Girls) are following in This is Happening’s footsteps (!) and writing an  e-newsletter.

First up an interview with Hillary Clinton. Oh yes.

The site says:

Feminism, style, health, politics, friendship and everything else. Coming fall 2015.

I have strong hunch that you will want to get it and that you will like it.

Hey! If you like This is Happening, I’m thinking you will love Lenny Letter.

And hey!

One day other people will be saying, if you like Lenny Letter then you will love This is Happening!

This is language

Words. I love ‘em! And reading about the slang and words of our times, I mean, it’s cool.

This is also a good place to privately get a glimpse of words and phrases you DON’T know.

You know, those young people keep changing it up.

This is crafty

These days How To Videos are the shit. You can learn anything via You Tube so recently I took to it to learn to knit.

In about 10 minutes time, I learned how to cast on and the knit stitch!

Now hold on.

Please don’t put your orders in just yet. I am not the craftiest so instead of a scarf, how’d you like a nice yarn coaster one day?! I’m on it!

This is teevee

Do yourself a favor and if you are a television watcher (the 2015 golden age and all. . . )

Please watch:

Amazon’s Catastrophe

Netflix’s Bloodline

(Editor’s note: as of this writing 8 episodes have been watched and there are 2 episodes to go)

Please continue watching:

FX’s Married

FXX’s You’re the Worst

And my favorite podcaster, Julie Klausner of the How Was Your Week podcast has a show on Hulu.com  – Difficult People. It’s billed as an updated and meaner Seinfeld. And you heard it here – it is definitely updated and it is definitely meaner.

This happened:

I co-wrote a piece with Brenda Janowitz, a prolific book author and Super Friend (it deserves capital letters).

20 reasons we are going to the beach today even though it is about to rain

Follow thru is everything!

This is more books

You do like books, right?

Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari

A comedian and a sociologist teamed up to write about love and technology. Things have changed and quickly!

For the multi-media experience you can also read Mara Altman’s Kindle Singles interview with Helen Fisher, a doctor of love so to speak. And to get it right — > she’s a social anthropologist and human behavior researcher.

As a former Human Ecology* student, I dig this stuff and think it’s important in this day and age of mindfulness to also not just breathe but also learn about how we relate to each other. What are we (humans) good at and where are our weaknesses?

*Human ecology is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary study of the relationship between humans and their natural, social, and built environments.

The Good House by Ann Leary

It’s gonna be a movie so that will be fun though the book is not a walk in the park. It’s about a woman in her fifties who drinks a lot. You know good writing when you read it and when you think to yourself as you are reading about a person who drinks and drinks and drinks. . . “Am I drunk, too?” you realize that is good writing. That happened!

The Burgess Boys by Elizabeth Strout

This is a favorite author of This is Happening. She wrote Olive Kitteridge, the book that the HBO movie was based on and it just won a ton of Emmys, if you are into that sorta thing. Strout also authored Amy and Isabelle, a book I read while on the Greek Island of Mykonos in the year 2000.

Just sayin’ because yes, I remember the trip well but I also remember a highlight of that trip was reading this incredible book while sitting at a seaside cafe.

That sea being the Mediterranean.

I should probably buy that

I love greeting cards. I am a collector of sorts. The sort who has her very own greeting card organizer. So, when I discovered these well, let’s just say I bought some.

I like you and naps.com

This is Funny:  (and there is possibly a repeat link from a past newsletter – I just didn’t check. My fact checkers are off for the season/quarter/year/they don’t exist.)

http://notoriousrbg.tumblr.com/ (I love everything about this. Feminism, funny, and a book is coming out so another multi-media experience – yes!)

Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom of this post.

While you’re here, think about following me on Instagram.

Why? Because it will be insta-great!

  1. Feel free to shake an egg (or 2) with Zach & me every Wed. at 9:15!!! Just remember not to take one from the yucky bin 😛

    • Haha. Hadn’t thought about the yucky bin for a long time. Ew. And yes! Can’t wait to rock out while walking in a circle to the left (and then to the right) with you and Zach.
